BFL13 Dedicated to “The Coach”

After crowning two professional champions in Vernon, B.C. this February, 11th at BFL13 live on The Fight Network, Battlefield Fight League will look toward a bright future. But BFL will also always recognize that Canadian MMA would be nothing without its pioneers, few of whom had greater impact, or a more generous spirit, than “The Coach.” That is why BFL13 is dedicated to MMA striking savant, but a still-greater family man, friend, and community member, Ontario’s Shawn Tompkins, whose name will appear at the ring entrance.

We can only hope to share several qualities with Thompkins, taken far too soon due to congenital heart disease in August, 2011, but one interest we certainly had in common was in building young, emerging MMA talent.

2 of Canada’s top fighters clash at BFL13 for the BFL Featherweight Strap!

When Battlefield Fight League returns with a second show at Vernon, B.C.’s Westbild Centre for BFL13 on February 11th, 2012, the promotion will not make the night’s only long-awaited encore.

In the co-main event, two of Canada’s very best featherweights, nearby Kelowna’s Mike Adams (6-0) and Nanaimo’s Graham Spencer (7-1 1NC), will also make a return of sorts to rematch a fight that took place in the very same building in May, 2010. This time,  Adams and Spencer will compete for BFL’s vacant 145lb. title!

At the time of their first bout, both fighters were 5-0 and each was presumed as being scouted by international MMA promotions eager to add to fledgling featherweight rosters. The pressure to win could hardly have been more intense, but the fight itself succeeded on every level, providing intense back-and-forth action and ending decisively when Adams secured a guillotine choke along the fence midway through the second round.

For Adams, whose diminutive size belies a ferocious spirit and considerable raw strength, the win in front of a boisterous hometown crowd seemed a portent of bigger things to come. Then again, as many in MMA circles know well, life frequently gets in the way. In fact, Adams, who trains under David Lea at the Okanagan’s famed Team Toshido, has not fought since.

Matt Baker vs. Buckland for the BFL pro Middleweight Strap

After weeks of speculation, the main event at Battlefield Fight League 13, set for Vernon, B.C. on February 11th, 2012, is official and it’s one of the biggest title fights in BFL history.

Local fan-favourite Matt “The Riotmaker” Baker (7-2), who is the most successful BFL pro fighter so far with three wins by stoppage, will face red-hot veteran Andrew Buckland (14-8-1), who will make his BFL debut for the vacant middleweight championship!

Especially to fight fans in the Thompson-Okanagan, Kamloops, B.C.’s own Matt Baker needs little introduction. One of the biggest draws in the region, Baker scored a hard-fought submission victory this August over Marcus Vinicius in the main event at Battlefield’s Vernon debut. The twenty-seven-year-old, who debuted in July, 2009, has competed nine times as a professional with nearly half those fights taking place close to home despite a sometimes frustrating lack of viable events.

A product of Chris Franco’s FKP MMA dojo, the ornately-tattooed Lin is widely renowned for his seamless blend of aggressive striking and lethal catch wrestling skills.  With the sole blemish on his five-fight record coming from a controversial stoppage that had none other than UFC champion Bas Rutten calling for an immediate rematch, Lin has cleaned out the bantamweight ranks in EFC, XFC and Armageddon Fighting Championships, and now sets his sights on the best of the best.

And the best is exactly who will welcome him to the Battlefield cage, as Lin will make his BFL debut against none other than the wildly popular Indo-Canadian superstar Gurdarshan “St. Lion” Mangat!

Caffiero to Face Xavier for the Welterweight Title in 5 days!

In MMA, a combat sport whose athletes train as hard as they compete, it is commonplace at all competitive levels for last-minute injuries to alter fight cards. The mark of top quality fight promotions is their ability to roll with these punches to consistently deliver fan-pleasing events.

As such, few observers were shocked when undisclosed injuries forced Saied Mirzaie from a coveted Welterweight title fight against submissions maestro Leo Xavier (2-1) at Battlefield Fight League 12 (Nov. 18th), but most will be pleased to learn striking dynamo Marco Caffiero (2-0) has stepped-up to the challenge on short notice.

Originally slated to appear in a separate fight earlier on the night’s main card, Caffiero is an always-dangerous Axe Capoeira specialist training out of Studio 54 Athletics in Victoria, B.C. He made an immediate impact in his BFL debut with a highlight reel KO over Sonny Sohota at BFL2, only to return with a third-round TKO stoppage over Jason Keller, a BFL stand-out in his own right, at BFL5.

Battlefield president Jay Golshani had the following to say about Caffiero’s very game decision to step up to this challenge:

“We would not give Caffiero a title shot against Xavier if we did not feel he was fully qualified. Marco is very highly touted and he is 2-0 within our organization… Marco has had a full camp training for another fight on this card, so he will be more than ready. This is Leo’s third different opponent for this card, so it will be tough on both guys with only a week to prep for each other, but come Friday night, this fight has all the makings of fight of the night.” Read more
